I remember hearing Szeryng playing the Beethoven in Seattle in the early 80's, he could fill the whole hall so effortlessly with his smooth bow strokes. You had to hear him live, just marvelous.
>> and next day went to his perphormens...free ticket!!! @michael turov Yes, that too is amazing. And yet, it is a fact of basic human nature that we appreciate something much more when we have to pay to get it. 😁
He could project so effortlessly in a large hall, but always with a smooth, buttery sound. And it sounded SO natural, unlike even a lot of great violinists today. One of a kind. You some sense with this live recording, but of course it doesn't match being there in person.
Beethoven and Szeryng for ever. Impagable. Bellísimo. Gracias!!!
This is a recording. I heard it live, on several occasions. None can imagine nowadays how much Szeryng could project in any concert hall. I was deeply affected by some negative comments by Perman in the Art of violin playing about Szeryng. Perlman never reached that level of playing in Beethoven concerto, Brahms, or Bach solo works...
didn't he say something like if you hear something on the radio and you can't tell who it is, it must be Szeryng, implying that that his playing is kind of plain, no outstanding characteristics? and he said it with a chuckle, in a slightly derisive manner. Henryk isn't my first choice for Paganini, Tchaikovsky, etc, but he *is* my first choice for Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, over Perlman, Heifetz or anybody else. i own this DVD, it's one of my favorite recordings of anything, by anybody. and no one, alive or dead can touch Szeryng on the solo Bach works. he stands alone, though Hilary comes close.
@@chuckcornelius194 Arthur Grumiaux is a worthy contemporary of Szerying regarding Mozart and some of the Bach. There's also a sublime performance of the Beethoven concerto of his on youtube too.
Perlman didn't say anything negative. As I remember he only said that there was no special characteristic. That is not neccessarily negative. I think it's positive, meaning there are no flaws to recognise him by.
@@Ickguenthrasil Let's put it this way - Joachim cadenza will grow in you! I first couldn't understand it but started loving it lately. If you still don't like it, check out Kogan version. Simply electrifying.

Henryk Szeryng was and still is among the great giants of music. Everything he plays is crucial.
Szeryng: No unnecessary embellishment, and rock-solid basics.
Yes. Szeryng has a solid foundation!

Since I could never see him live, this video is wonderful....unmatched playing.
Can't believe I had privet dinner with him in Chicago, 1981 and next day went to his perphormens...free ticket!!!
Wow ! What an experience and privilege !!!!!!!!!!! Congrats !!!

Szeryng.... The best....😢
A true violinist's violinist.
Szeryng is a miracle, nothing less
Best word to describe Szeryng's playing: Satisfying.
Vivat and Cheers for the Master Mr Henryk Szeryng !
A master at work weaving magic.

I agree. I heard him play Brahms in Dallas in the 60s and again with National Symphony in Washington, D.C. in the 70s. Exquisite!

Szering divine. As usual ! Genial Beethoven is Smiling for listening Szering where the Genial and sooo loved composer is now !
As much as I love the other greats, Henryk is the all-around master.
Szeryng ıs the greatest of all the greats.
Szeryng: Great great Master.

There is a very fine performance of Perlman live playing the Beethoven, but yeah, it was a low blow to crticize Szeryng.

Where’s the first note?
Does he write his own cadenza for the 2nd + 3rd movements?

This cadenza is by Joseph Joachim💛
Henryk Szeryng był wspaniałym skrzypkiem. Co to za orkiestra i dyrygent? Dlaczego nie ma krótkiej informacji po angielsku?

The conductor is Jorge Mester. The year of this recording is 1987, so a few months before Szeryng's death, and the orchestra is either the Aspen Chamber Orchestra or the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra.
Or since this video is in French and produced in Canada, perhaps the orchestra is the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
Yes, this indeed the Montreal Symphony, I recognize my former chair partner in the second violin section, Pierre Jean. Szeryng at his best!

Can someone please name the encore piece? I'm supposing it's Bach?
